I admit it took 40 years of practice to perfect. It takes an architect with special skill sets to turn their clients dream home into a buildable home in under 24 hours work. One that more accurately represents what the client wants than by any other methods.
F.Y.I. here is how it works. When we meet, I will ask about your preferences as we walk the site or existing building. I seek to fully understand you, while I assess the potential assets and note any challenges to overcome at the site to better suit your program. Then with you, I will discuss ideas for your immediate feedback and deftly draw plans and 3-D sketches on paper, as we discuss each idea. This process with its many refinements provides you with graphic solutions to achieve your purpose for the meeting and design.
An example, Something I learned when 20 years old is that my client’s purpose will drive the creative path to their solution. My industrious friend Reid Rosenthal, my age, asked me to design & help renovate a roofless half framed Mtn. home he bought West of Ft. Collins. I joined him for the summer, after finishing year 1 at Pratt institute of architecture in NY. I listened to both Reid’s concerns and his vision while we measured, and I drafted existing plans. His purpose: to finish the home, then get investors to fund his corp., Osprey homes.
Designing with my client, Reid at his site proved to work the best. The place needed something to unify the soon to be tall 3-story, CO mountain home. I suggested a grand rustic staircase, spiraling around a ponderosa pine tree. It would connect all three stories with drama and unity. Reid saw me sketch it on our scaled plans of the home and asked me to build it. We cut a tree from the property, trimmed and erected the tree trunk from basement to above the 2ND floor. I had the stairs treads milled. Then I hung them from steel bars from each floor above. Reid took the photo of me on the stairs from the new ridge beam and put the house on the market that week. In one year, Reid completed all three tasks, his purpose. Osprey Homes blossomed. I also got to design more homes for Reid.
Lesson: Continue to be creative yet judicious with my ideas, as that best serves all my clients’ interests, as they are inspired by my harmonious designs. Many have gone out on a limb like Reid to make it more stunning. That fulfills their purpose and life with passion. I will accept your challenging project with eyes wide open, then I will carefully complete it.
